tree protection Services

The provision of Tree Protection Fencing usually involves the provision of a scaffold frame driven into the ground to which weld mesh fencing panels are attached.

This is conducted in accordance with BS5837 and is designed to temporarily protect trees in readiness for demolition, development or other work taking place on site where there would otherwise be a risk of damaging trees.

WSH Services, based in Leeds are fully conversant with the provision of BS5837 and are experienced in the erection of this tree fencing and in related services such as protecting root areas (Cellweb Tree Root Protection) which fall outside the bounds of any tree protection fencing.

what is bs5837 : 2012

BS5837 provides a statutory duty on local authorities to consider the protection of trees that are potentially affected by developments.

All trees that are to be retained need to be protected by barriers and or ground protection which will be detailed in the tree protection plan. This has to be in place prior to any machinery or materials being brought on to site to commence construction.

Tree protection fencing is to protect the tree in its entirety which includes the root system, the trunk, bark, branches, tissue and surrounding soil from damage, compaction and contamination.

The tree protection fencing creates a barrier that forms a ridged framework to exclude construction activity from the appropriate degree of proximity to all retained trees, which is to remain ridged if hit by machinery on site.

The default specification is;

  • Vertical and horizontal framework secured in to the ground, well braced to resist impact.
  • Welded mesh panels are then securely attached to the framework.
  • Where the framework cannot be secured into the ground the alternative is to use rubber or concrete feet.
  • Where possible these areas should be a ‘Construction Exclusion Zone’ but where this is not appropriate ground protection needs to be installed.

Temporary Ground Protection

Ground protection is for areas that have excessive pedestrian movement or use of plant and machinery that may lead to soil compaction. Certain cases may require temporary ground protection that is capable of supporting any site traffic without compacting or distorting the underlying soil and or root system of the retained trees. Once in place the tree protection fencing and or ground protection matting cannot be altered or removed without prior approval where necessary.

What If BS5837 Is Overlooked;

If trees are overlooked during construction they are either lost or not protected adequately enough which results in their demise/decline. Therefore BS5837 provides the default for their protection from:

  • ‍Heavy machinery crushing the tree roots
  • ‍Damage to branches/bark leaving tissue exposed
  • ‍Severing roots by the excavation process
  • ‍Fire damage
  • ‍Fuel/Oil spills poisoning the tree root system
  • Changing levels in the soil around the trees which results in root death
  • ‍Installation of impermeable surfaces
  • The root system is very susceptible to damage as their extent cannot be seen

Medium Duty Fencing

Used for formal areas and access roads where construction/site machinery and pedestrians still operate but that the trees aren’t within the main construction area. Tree protection fencing can be installed using:

  • Vertical scaffold posts secured into the ground, well braced to resist impact.
  • ‍Welded mesh panels are then securely attached to the posts.

Low Duty / Stock Fencing:

Used for formal areas, access roads and car parking areas where construction/site machinery and pedestrians still operate but that isn’t within the main construction area to protect bushes, shrubs and lawned areas.

  • Vertical wooden posts secured into the ground, well braced to resist impact.
  • ‍Stock fencing / mesh is then securely attached to the framework.
